ISS Africa – Rethinking responses to unconstitutional changes of government in West Africa

Since 2020, West Africa has experienced six unconstitutional changes of government in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The recurrence of these coups, the prolonged nature of the ongoing transitions, and the apparent ability of their leaders to withstand regional, continental, and international pressure call for a reconsideration of how to respond to these dynamics.
