The High Representative visits Ottawa (Canada)
11 December 2024From November 26 to 27, the High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel, H.E. Mr. Hamadi Meimou, visited Ottawa to meet with Canadian authorities. Consultations were held with representatives from Global Affairs and the Department of National Defense. Canada is a central partner of the Coalition, with a long-standing and significant commitment to the Sahel. It has supported the Coalition for the Sahel’s Secretariat since its inception by providing an expert and funding.
On November 26, the High Representative was received by Mr. Rob Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Foreign Secretary. He then met Cheryl Urban, Assistant Deputy Minister for Africa and Pan-Geographic Affairs. Discussions focused on political and security developments in the Sahel, as well as the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation and violence against civilians. Against this worsening backdrop, the importance of strengthening vital international and regional cohesion was underlined.
The following day, November 27, H.E. Mr. Hamadi Meimou met with three World Affairs Directors involved in the Sahel issue.
The High Representative also met with officials from the Department of National Defense, providing an opportunity to exchange views on Canada’s support for regional security and defense cooperation arrangements, as well as its bilateral involvement.
