7th Contact Group of the Sahel Coalition

20 June 2022

The 7th Contact Group of the Sahel Coalition was held on Thursday, June 9, 2022

Dr. Djimé Adoum, High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel, had the honor of inviting Coalition partners to the 7th Contact Group with Ambassador Bart de Groof, Special Envoy of the Kingdom of Belgium for the Sahel. This was the first in-person meeting since the launch of the Coalition.

In the wake of the ECOWAS Summit on May 24 and on the eve of the negotiation cycle of the MINUSMA mandate in the Security Council, this meeting addressed the situation of political transitions as well as the urgency of acting in the face of growing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by terrorist groups, defense and security forces and militias. The growing challenge of the food crisis was highlighted.

The Contact Group also took stock of the process of updating the Coalition’s roadmap, which was initiated at the request of Ministers on March 9. It took note of the lessons learned from the morning’s workshop, where partners had exchanged views on an initial draft submitted by the relevant secretariats. This draft took into account an initial workshop organized by the Chadian presidency of the G5 Sahel in Dakar.
