Mission of the High Representative to North Africa

The High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel, H.E. Mr. Hamadi Meimou, began 2024 with a mission intended to strengthen exchanges with North African partners active in the Coalition for the Sahel.

In Cairo, the High Representative was received on January 23 by H.E. Mr. Hamdi Loza, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, with whom the exchange focused on the political, security and humanitarian challenges in the Sahel and Egypt’s vision to strengthen partnership dynamics in the region.

The High Representative also had the opportunity to visit the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA). This Egyptian public agency – labelled as a Centre of Excellence by the African Union – specialises in training, capacity building and research in the areas of peace and security and is active in the Sahel. The High Representative participated in a meeting with important partners of the CCCPA at the invitation of its Director General, Ambassador Ahmed Abdel-Latif.

In Tunis, the High Representative was received on January 26 by H.E. Mr. Nabil Ammar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Tunisian Republic. The exchange focused on the challenges faced by Sahelian countries and their African and international partners, and on the importance of dialogue between Africans in responding to the various challenges in the Sahel.

The High Representative visited the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), an intergovernmental organisation created in 1992 and which has been based in Tunis since 2000. The OSS team presented to its work in terms of knowledge production and advice, particularly with regards to the shared management of water resources, the fight against desertification and adaptation to climate change in Africa.
